Shall we play tennis?

An update on OKTA’s meeting with the City of Kelowna and various tennis stakeholders in the Okanagan.

A lot has been happening in the past month. Representatives of OKTA met with the City of Kelowna in late February and presented the tremendous support shown in the response to our recent survey (see results here). The City representatives welcomed the information as a strong statement of the desires of the overall tennis community in Kelowna and surrounding areas.

They also restated the importance of a unified message from all clubs and public players and asked if OKTA had the support of all of the clubs in the region. In response to this question, OKTA restated our mandate to represent the tennis community in ongoing discussions about a future indoor facility and other regional tennis initiatives.

Clubs who formally expressed support for OKTA’s mandate to create a year-round tennis facility:

  • ✅ Lakeview Heights TC

  • ✅ Gallagher’s Canyon TC

  • ✅ Lake Country TC

The Okanagan Mission Tennis Club has not formally expressed support and their Tennis Committee is not yet united on the matter. This was a concern to the City. It was noted for all concerned that 3 members of the OKTA board are also members of the Mission Tennis Committee and that discussions will continue on this matter within the club.

What you can do to help

  1. Request that your local club support the mandate of a year-round tennis facility

To continue the positive momentum initiated with the City of Kelowna, the OKTA board requests that if your club or association has not expressed full support for OKTA as the unified voice of the Kelowna and area tennis community that you contact your club leadership to request they do so.

  2. Let your representatives know that you want to play tennis all-year-round!

Furthermore, you can also express your support for OKTA directly to the City of Kelowna by contacting a city councillor or the recreation department directly in the form of an email or a letter.
